How to build without building
If “the city is the striated space par excellence”*, then the practice of architecture is the archetype of striation. This project questions where contemporary architecture stands in relation to the concepts of the smooth and the striated in the context of post-war Beirut. It proposes a way of building that fosters an ongoing dialogue between architect and site, embracing the inherent qualities of a site to create spaces that are unique to their context.
*In Milles Plateaus, Deleuze and Guattari distinguish between smooth and striated spaces. The smooth is the territory of the nomad (open, fluid). The striated is created by the sedentary (organized, structured, delineated).
Final year project at the American University of Beirut.
